German Academic Exchange Service-(DAAD)-Fellowships

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Fellowship

Introduction

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) annually offers fellowships (research and sandwich-model) to the Government of India for Indian nationals. These fellowships are meant for advanced studies and research at universities and research institutes in the Federal Republic of Germany and, as a rule, not for obtaining degrees.

Essential prerequisites for both research and sandwich model

  • Candidates must possess a Master's degree with a first class at Master's or Bachelor's level.

  • Candidates must be residing in India at the time of application.

  • Candidates must have recent-dated letters of placement from a German professor. Scholars should get confirmation in writing that their research plan is feasible at the selected German university / institute and that they would get placement for the duration of at least one year to carry out research there. The confirmation should not be older than 6 months.

  • Candidates in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences must have a good knowledge of the German Language.

  • Application must be routed through proper channel.

Prerequisites for research fellowships

These fellowships are open only to those who are working as teachers in Indian universities or recognized institutes of university standard, Indian Institutes of Technology, and to scientists in CSIR laboratories and at research institutes of national importance.

  • Besides the abovementioned core qualifications, candidates must have at least two years of teaching or research experience

  • Candidates should not be more than 32 years of age on 1st October of the year in which the fellowship begins.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are permanently employed and whose employers undertake to reemploy them on return. Exceptions will be considered on an individual basis.

The purpose of these fellowships is to enable young scholars, scientists and university teachers to broaden their knowledge in their fields, to give them an opportunity to carry out research in Germany, and to familiarize themselves with current methods of research there.

Prerequisites for fellowships under the Sandwich Model scheme

The Sandwich Model is a multi-phased fellowship scheme which allows scholars who are registered for their PhD at an Indian university / institute to carry out research for their thesis alternately in India and in Germany under the supervision of an Indian as well as a German guide according to a schedule previously drafted out in consultation with them.

  • Candidates should not be more than 36 years of age on 1st October of the year in which the fellowship begins

  • Candidates must be registered for their PhD degree in India and should have already started working on their thesis. The doctorate degree is awarded by the Indian university / institute exclusively.

Duration

Both types of fellowships are awarded initially for a period of one year and extendable upto another 12 months, upon application, and are preceded by a four months German Language course at a Goethe Institute in Germany.

Note

The fellowships are offered in fields earmarked in consultation with the Government of India (Department of Education; Ministry of Human Resource Development; Council of Scientific and industrial Research; University Grants Commission). These Government of India agencies announce the offer sometime in July / August and invite applications. Application form are available from them once the offer has been announced.

The subject Medicine is not included under this programme.
