JOB PROSPECTS

Footwear technologists can be employed as managers in the field of production or marketing, depending on their qualifications, or as supervisors in the factories. Those with qualifications in designing are appointed as designers in the various footwear companies. Technicians, on the other hand, are involved in the production work in the shoe factories. 

FUTURE PROSPECTS

Due to increasing emphasis by the Ministry of Commerce on the export of footwear, there is tremendous scope for growth in the industry, which is expected to grow by 20-30% in the coming years, and offers good career opportunities. Indian exports, too, are expected to reach 400 million pairs in the next five years. 

There is also a lot of scope for setting up private units. This is because the investment cost is quite reasonable for small-scale industries. Moreover, the FDDI provides loans to students securing more than 70% marks (depending on their financial situation). The loan is therefore, a merit-cum-need based loan, where the emphasis is more on merit. These loans can be repaid in two years time.
