The Work

Management consultants are basically troubleshooters, who are called in to improve an organization's effectiveness; diagnose faults; and suggest remedies. Management services supplement this function by providing objective information and analysis for improved management decision-making.

Nature of Work

Consultancy involves a thorough research of a company's organization, its potential and competition and based on this study, drawing up a plan of action to improve matters. Consultants suggest changes required in strategy, structure or policy. They recommend and assist in the choice and implementation of new technology and systems to enhance overall efficiency within the company.

This includes the management of change, which is helping to effect a smooth transition from traditional to new working patterns. Management consultancy work is not confined to industry. Consultants can be called for any area of professional work-even charities or public authorities.

Core Management Services

WORK STUDY, ORGANISATION AND METHODS

While the basic aims and principles are the same, work-study has its origins in production; and organization and methods is concerned with the office. The two main aspects of this work are method study and work measurement.

Method study involves the analysis of operations and suggestions for their improvement. Work measurement uses specific techniques to calculate the time and human effort required for set tasks in order to establish standards of performance on which to base planning, control, payment systems or the introduction of new technologies.

In addition to identifying problems, collecting data, evaluating and proposing solutions, this area could also involve the implementation of these solutions.

OPERATIONAL RESEARCH

Applies scientific methods to complex organizational and5 management problems at the broader policy or strategic level. The aim is to improve existing systems and methods of decision-making.
Operational research takes into account all the variable factors in a given situation and compares the implications of alternative decisions or courses of action taken to facilitate the most suitable choice.

Specialist Areas

Due to the vastness of this field, and the diversity of expertise required, consultants tend to specialize. This may be in an aspect of management like financial distribution; marketing or human resources.

A specific type of such-such as a public or government undertaking; the manufacturing industry; or voluntary agency.
